The countdown is down! It's just a few days until the 10th Annual Farriers Conference at the Equine Clinic at Oakencroft in Ravenna, New York. Scheduled for October 22-23, this event is a tradition for farriers and veterinarians in New England and New York.

This year's clinician is farrier Michael Wildenstein, APF, CJF, FWCF (Hons). Mike is retired from teaching farrier at Cornell vet school in New York and now offers his services as a referral or consulting farrier, working in a hands-on capacity with a horse's current farrier and/or veterinarian for special problems, or to help farriers improve their skill on their home ground with their own tools and their own horses.

Mike is one of three people in the world to have passed the extremely distinguished Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Farriers examination in the United Kingdom with an "Honors" designation. He is one of four farriers in the United States to have passed the Fellowship exam.

If you have to miss this event, you can catch Mike this month on the "Rural Heritage" show on RFD-TV, which is featuring him shoeing Percheron horses in a four-part series.

Mike's clinics are renowned for the simple fact that he is able to package his love for horses and his understanding of farriery together with his superb teaching skills. He has worked with farriers of all levels and wants to see people help the horses they are working on today, and upgrade their skills or understanding of problems for the benefit of the horses they will work on tomorrow.

The Equine Clinic at Oakencroft offers the top clinicians in the nation each year, and places them in a friendly, casual setting where everyone has an opportunity to interact, if they want to, and where the cases are lined up so attendees have a combination of lectures and real-world applications.

On the schedule for the two-day program this year are these topics:
  • Conformation and Deviation
  • Fungal Infections of Horse's Hoof (especially White Line Disease)
  • Angular Limb Deviations in Foals
  • Horseshoes for Skeletal Lesions (such as ringbone, sidebone, pedal osteitis)
  • Horseshoes for Soft Tissue Injuries (responding to damage to tendons and ligaments)
  • Horseshoes for Laminitis
  • Shoeing Draft Horses
  • Radiographic Imaging Relevant to Farriers
  • Trimming and Evaluation of the Equine Hoof
  • Hands-On Demonstrations and Applications

Those topics cover a lot of problems that many people are facing this fall. This event offers plenty of time to ask questions of Mike and all the people in attendance about problems. The Clinic serves food throughout the event and makes everyone feel at home.

The Clinic at Oakencroft is located in a beautiful rural setting south of Albany, New York, near the Connecticut and Massachusetts borders and very convenient to the New York Thruway and the Mass Pike. While there, you will likely meet staff veterinarians and hosts Dr. Steve Naile (who organized the event), Dr. Amy SerkDr. Ryan PennoDr. Jennifer SaffordDr. Carlin JonesDr. Jen McDonaldDr. Calsey GrantDr. Alli Linn (2015-2016 Intern),and Dr. Carolyn Hurwitz (2014-2015 Intern),
